Copland: Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo

Summary of the weekend

This year we played two contrasting pieces.  The more modern "Rodeo" by Copland successfully evoked the wildness of a Hoedown with its rhythmic complexities and the flow of music through the various sections of the orchestra. Of interest, two of our members had played this previously when Copland himself was the conductor.  Our other piece was older but Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture lived up to its reputation with its sweeping melodies and dramatic ending.

The highlight of the weekend was the input from the NZSO tutors in our sectional rehearsals.  The photograph below is when the orchestra met again on Saturday afternoon as a whole but including the tutors.
