Bolero 2020
St James Church, Woburn Rd. Sunday 3pm, 2 August 2020.
Conductor: Donald Armstrong
The first concert for 2020 attracted an exceptionally large audience keen for live music after the restrictions of lock down. The hand sanitiser a reminder of the need to be vigilant.
The concert began with the lively Berlioz Hungarian Dance and then we welcomed our soloist, Melanie Pinkney, for a stunning performance of Saints-Saëns Violin Concerto no 3
The audience and orchestra delighted in this playing.
After the interval, which included
tea and biscuits, the orchestra played Debussy's Petite Suite.
This is a beautiful work with its contrasting
lyrical and
lively movements. A view showing the cello and double bass
sections.
The concert concluded with the very popular piece by Ravel: Bolero.
The atmospheric percussion rhythm set the scene. The
many
wind and brass soloists played the haunting themes as this much loved
work increased in intensity until all the orchestra were
playing.
