Soloists for 2011

John Roxburgh -  Alfred Hill Viola concerto (June)

John Roxburgh recently completed his Bachelor of Music degree, majoring in classical performance, and is currently pursuing a Posgraduate Diploma in the same field. He is scheduled to participate in the presentation of research at the 2011 International Viola Congress and the Royal Northern College of Music, as well as performing and conducting in Bradford, England. 

In 2008 he moved from Dunedin to Wellington for further studies in the viola at the NZSM with Prof. Donald Maurice. John has played with various orchestras including the National Youth Orchestra, the Vector Wellington Orchestra, and the Southern Sinfonia, and as well as playing a variety of chamber music. John is also a closet trombonist, and he has played in a variety of ensembles including a brass band, jazz band, orchestra, and a Ska band called “The ‘Bones.”  Outside of music, John enjoys a variety of sports including Taekwon-do, volleyball, Ultimate Frisbee, and foosball (table soccer).

Nicholas Walshe

Wellington-born clarinettist Nick Walshe is currently studying towards a Post Graduate Diploma in Music Performance, under the tuition of Phil Green at the NZSM. He is also working towards a BA in English Literature and teaches clarinet and saxophone in the Wellington area.

He has played both clarinet and bass clarinet with the Central Band of the RNZAF and the Wellington Youth Orchestra, with whom he performed the Mozart Clarinet Concerto last year. Nicholas is currently the bass clarinettist for the National Youth Orchestra.
